What an awesome little place in the bywater. Looks so cool inside and there is a cute patio seating area outside. Cajun Hot Spiced Buttered Rum Popcorn - I didn't know something this delicious and unique was possible but it is and you can only get it at Oxalis. Frites with two sauces- also excellent. I'm a sucker for fries with aioli. Their burger is one of the best in the cities. And it's not huge but the perfect size, all fresh ingredients.

Ate at Oxalis last night with our 8-year-old. There was great, "sophisticated" food for us, and an amazing burger for him (I tried it, it was that good). The waiter was super kind and talked soccer with him. The restaurant is comfortable, the staff lovely. You! Go eat there!

Love the place- tasty food and great cocktails! I would recommend they consider adding foam pads to the ledges by the tables with the couches.... Would be more comfortable to lean back and rest your head.

If you're looking for a classy small plate dinner and a drink, go to oxalis. If you're looking to have a rollicking-good time, ask the staff to lead you to their sexy little back-bar, "the branch," where you will meet Geoff, a crafty-beautiful-goodtimesaficionado, who will make you the best damn daiquiri you've ever had in your goodman life. Five stars.

This is just a review of the rude behavior of Oxalis staff I encountered and not the food or otherwise as I didn't get to that point. I attended a wedding in the area so my friend and I are all dressed up and decide we want to try Oxalis so we look at Yelp and it says they open at 4:00 but we go to Bacchanal first to have a bit of wine fun first. So we arrive at Oxalis around 4:54 and walk right in and don't see a hostess but there is a bartender busy doing some bar things behind the bar so we just take a seat as nobody else is inside. After a few minutes a lady carrying a box walks by and asks "are you waiting for somebody that works at the restaurant" so we indicate we just want a menu and some drinks. The very unhappy box holder tells us that "the restaurant isn't open yet and the door shouldn't have been left open so you shouldn't be inside." I asked what time they opened and the box women tells me, "5:00" so I look at my phone and reply, "it's 4:56?" so we get up and leave and go to Delachaise instead as there was no way we were waiting outside in the thermonuclear heat. I guess they really hate seersucker suits in the Bywater as this was the most unprofessional and rude experience I've had at a New Orleans restaurant. Geez box girl sorry you were having a bad day but that was just EXCEPTIONALLY rude and unprofessional to treat customers like that. I don't care so much when people are bunghole whack-jobs to me as I will make entertainment out of them but the fact that this box girl was rude to my guest made me quite unhappy. Quibbling over a mere 4 minutes in NOLA is ludicrous and cost Oxalis income that night so a firm application of a lesson in Southern manners is apparent as I assume box girl is some form of Yankee interloper unversed in our superior Southern ways and traditions of polite human communication.

My wife and I went to Oxalis last month on June 14th. It was our first wedding anniversary so we got dolled up, found a relative to watch the child free-of-charge and left the house with high expectations of a romantic, perfect night together. I have to say. I am really glad we went here. The menu was perfect and with enough options so you still feel like an American but without the endless list of items as to where you feel paralyzed with choices. The drinks were strong and the service was insanely perfect. We had Eric as a server. He knew how to be attentive without being intrusive. His jokes were funny and his recommendations were knowledgable. Honestly, and this is no bullsh*t - Oxalis is going to be our spot; our date spot. That spot where we can spend as much money as we want and enjoy each other's company. Oxalis is a well lit, sophisticated-without-pretense setting selling perfect, delicious food by people who know what they're doing.

I absolutely loved my experience at Oxalis. We were greeted immediately on a Friday night by a friendly hostess who sat us immediately in the quaint middle room that houses just two roomy but cozy booths. Our server was genuinely sweet and charming and was very patient as we took some time chatting before deciding on drinks. I chose a Moscow Mule, as I've recently gotten into ginger beer and our server mentioned their's was made in house. Absolutely delicious and I had three! Wheee! We started with the beet salad which was delectable. Per the menu, "Pickled and Braised Beets, Smoked Blue Cheese Crema ,Candied Walnuts and Fresh Dill". I ordered the recommended burger and was not disappointed. I added bacon which was nicely set against pickled shallots. Our server recommended sharing frites, which was appreciated as it was a large serving. I didn't even get to check out the patio space, but we had a nice leisurely evening out and I cannot wait to go back.

Alright I'm updating my review because I've gone back twice more. I got the burger again and it was better -- they still could give me more shallots and other toppings but better. The other time I went, I had the steak and enjoyed it. Their fries are good. I'm mainly giving them another star for improvements in service and the realization that you just really can't beat a well made old fashioned for $5 at a restaurant similar to this one anywhere else in the city (that I know of).

It doesn't get better than this, seriously. The bartenders are so sweet (props to Stephanie at the back bar), the food is on-point and the bourbon/whiskey menu is to-die-for. Reasonable price point and inventive menu items are just icing on the cake. I have the pate (seriously, foodgasm worthy) and split the bo saam and the burger with the beau. Both sandwiches had clean flavor profiles and were expertly executed. My old fashioned was delicious and the follow-up cocktail, which I have forgotten the name of, was also divine. The location is off-the-main-path but has such a nice atmosphere, I only wish my house were so cool. All in all, a must-visit when you are in NOLA.

Went again last night. I really like this place so am still giving it 3 stars. The bartender was really nice. I had the paintbrush drink which was really good (the menu changes so much that I can't keep up with the exact names). I didn't think that I would have liked it that much because it was a citrus drink but I really enjoyed it. I also had the creme brulee because I was craving something semi sweet. Unfortunately it was completely burnt on top so to not waste 7 bucks I picked at it to get the best bank for my buck but it was terribly burnt.... :(

Seriously the best kimchi and short rib I have ever had (not really but so amazing)! Great service from Caitlin and what an amazing ambience. So happy this was our first dining experience in New Orleans...highly recommend coming out of the quarter to enjoy this place.

We had a really nice dinner here and would definitely return. My husband was feeling a little off of his game, probably from bingeing on beignets and other yummies while in New Orleans. So, we didn't get to try everything on the menu that we'd have liked to try. We arrived around 7:00 on a Saturday without a reservation and were seated with no problem, but the place definitely filled up quickly, so I would likely try to reserve in the future. The restaurant got pretty loud -- there is no upholstery to speak of to dampen the noise, and the music was blaring. It's probably a great place to go for a first date because you don't have to worry about talking too much! We started with the kale salad, beet bruschetta, and Korean wings. The waitress seemed a little confused that we didn't order more food, but like I said, my husband was feeling off of his game. The kale salad was probably the best thing that we had in New Orleans all weekend -- so fresh, light, and lovely. I was a big fan of the beet bruschetta, as well -- though in truth, beets really aren't that easy to eat as a topping on bread, so I ended up taking them off and eating them with a fork and then enjoying the toothsome bread afterward. My husband loved the Korean wings -- though they were SO messy to eat (at least wet naps were provided)! We ended with a really lovely brewer's creme brulee, and were satisfied with all of these choices. I would definitely make a point of going back to try more of the menu!

This is mediocre at best, there were 5 of us and we started with a charcuterie & cheese board which were very good. Next we enjoyed the Korean wings. One person ordered the short ribs which were over cooked but quite tasty. 2 ordered the Hangar steak with fries. Chewy is the best way to describe the steak but the fries were delicious. The saving grace of the meal was the hamburgers, they were incredible.

We really had a great night here! This is an old vintage with a new twist hipster vibe restaurant. I am so happy my friend invited us on a double date. The service is 5 star and classy. The parking wasn't bad but it was not a high traffic time. I would be weary. ...it's Bywater. The food was all red with the exception of this veggie dish I got. It included grits, which was to die! I did not have any drinks but I heard the cocktails are really amazing. I had tea but wish they had cappuccino.

My husband and I came here for dinner and we LOVED it! Adorable, intimate atmosphere, great service, and amazing food. My husband ordered fried okra and duck pate (he loved both) and I ordered the salmon.. AMAZING! It was cooked perfectly, and the presentation was beautiful. It was one of the best meals we had during our week in NOLA. Also, my husband ordered an Old Fashioned, and it was only $5.00 for happy hour! He said it was also one of the best he's had. This is a great casual or date night restaurant. We would both highly recommend it! We ate here after a day of swimming at the Country Club. A perfect ending to the day.

Yum yum yummm! I love their whole menu and I want to have it all in my belly. As far as the bar menu goes, Whiskey is their thing. If you are like me, you might say, Whiskey? What color is it? Brown-ish maybe? is that what Don Draper drinks? If so, I need to have some so i can be uber awesome. Being that I am not a whiskey connoisseur I was apprehensive when I ordered, but I always like to stick to things that places specialize in. I want to fully embrace their culture and let it live in me. I selected the French 95, because I like French 75s and this drink was a whole 20 numbers higher than that so obviously it will be delicious. I am so happy I presumed the correct notion. The drink was freakin delicious and I could have drank them all night. Hello whiskey, it's me, your new bff. I tried both the wings, because I like to compare apples to apples. Here is the verdict. American wings: bland, not that flavorful except the bites with the blue cheese and overall a disappointment. Korean wings: ding ding ding! We have a winner! These wings are worth having your face covered in kimchi sauce. Full of flavor, spice and everything nice! The sweet potato poutine was like butter in my mouth. I don't even think I chewed it. I just let it slide down my gullet like a snake. The service was great too. The server knew the menu front and back and offered some great suggestions. Even though it was busy on a Saturday the wait for the table and the food was nonexistent so these folks got all their ducks in a row over here!

CAJUN POPCORN! It was the first thing I ate when I landed in New Orleans and it remained one of my favorite things that we are over the weekend. Sounds basic but it was way beyond popcorn sprinkled with cayenne and paprika. The ambiance was great for a relaxed night drinking creative and well-made cocktails. The bartender, though initially somewhat removed, offered great suggestions on what to do in the city. Definitely worth a stop in!

I literally wandered into Oxalis without a clue as to the type of food they served, if they had a good reputation or even the name of said restaurant. We'd initially planned to go to Booty's across the street, but a friend noticed people streaming in an out of Oxalis and said, "How about that place?" Turned out to be a FABULOUS decision. From top to bottom, we had a fantastic dining experience. The hostess (young girl with long hair) was incredibly welcoming in that way that makes you feel right at home. We ordered a few (fantastic) cocktails at the bar and within a few minutes, our table was ready. The ambiance of the place was great. Velvety booths, old pictures on the wall, dim lighting. Upscale, down home and - somehow - chic at the same time. We were seated outside under beautiful greenery and climbing vines. I spent the rest of the meal fantasizing about having my wedding ceremony in this space. (Am I engaged? Answer: NO.) We began with buttered rum popcorn and bruschetta. Both were easily some of the best things I've tasted in recent memory. No kidding. Amazing. The menu was a great mix of steak, burgers, and more creative dishes. My friend ordered marrow for his burger. Wheeeeeeee! My steak arrived cooked to perfection, with a huge serving of plump fries on the side. My boyfriend got the lamb belly, and it was melt-in-your-mouth amazing. The beet salad was delish. Services was friendly and attentive without hovering. Prices were pretty reasonable. Four entrees, four appetizers and four drinks came to $120. Not cheap, but for the quality and taste, well worth it. I want to go back for a DOUBLE serving of popcorn, a savory funnel cake, more fries and hopefully a dessert this time too. Oxalis, please will you deliver? Uptown is not THAT far away, lol. Yum.

I stopped in for drinks for my birthday twin in January. I LOVED their menu. And my choice of bourbon + their old fashioned was delish! The bartender was personable and checked back to make sure my drink was too my liking. May I reiterate that their brown liquor list is awesome. I The only food I tried was their popcorn and, yes, it was really crack-like. Definitely a space I hope to return to soon and sample some of their yummy eats.

My excitement upon hearing that a whiskey bar was opening less than five blocks away from my home was only overwhelmed by my fear that I may never be sober again. Oxalis delivered on all my booze hopes and dreams. A cheap old fashioned and several other whiskey laced concoctions will satisfy any whiskey enthusiast. A smattering of other cocktails should keep any whiskey detractor firmly satisfied with their ill-suited life choices. The food highlight is the appetizer menu, featuring cajun butter rum spiced popcorn and a killer cheese plate, both of which compliment any cocktail. The vegetarian entrees leave a little to be desired and are also on the expensive side. As with many vegetarian entrees which are predominately vegetable based (not prominently including any grain) they are a bit bland. Both dishes are interesting though, and surpass the average vegetable only or salad dish. On the meat side of the menu, a friend of mine ordered the extremely reasonably priced burger and proclaimed it to be one of the best he'd devoured. My only real disappointment with Oxalis is the lack of hipster backlash at its existence. Located across the street from Bootys and with enough Edison bulbs to gentrify the upper and lower nine the lack of hip sarcastic outrage is truly perplexing. While this may not be my new dinner spot, it is the spot in the bywater for cocktails and small plates, especially for whiskey enthusiasts. An added bonus, the staff is extremely congenial, knowledgeable and friendly without any hint of snark or pretense.

For reference, I visited Oxalis on a Friday night for 7pm. Parking: Oxalis is located in a mixed residential/commercial area so the parking depending on your timing can be a little hard to find. You may have to venture to a side street if arriving after 7pm to this location. Service: Oxalis was just at the beginning of getting crowded, so if you venture to this location after 7:30 (like most establishments) on a weekend expect to wait for a little bit. The hostess was sweet and very proactive, actually she was more helpful than our waiter. As it got a little more busy our waiter disappeared. The hostess actually checked on us, got us things we needed after long waits as well as after we waited so long for the bill, she went and made everything happen her self and for that I'm thankful they had such an hands-on hostess. Food: I went with the Oxalis Burger, which was a very tasty burger and could possibly make it up there in the tops especially for their home-made bacon which just made the burger more flavorful. The fried that went along with this burger was soooo tasty, I wanted to just sit there and eat them even after I was full. Overall this was a great meal that actually came out timely and as requested. Drinks: Not often I'm able to order a Pisco Sour at a restaurant, so that made me happy and it was delicious. I could go back there just for that. Overall this was a good experience especially for a Friday night. Its good location to have a few drinks with food with a few friends as well as a date.

Chef Jonathan Lestingi has parlayed his French training, his experience with his former eatery, and the trendy spirits cocktails and cuisine into a gastropub with equality of food and drink. Renovations to the former restaurant/BBQ joint to a slick eatery with traditional bar in the front dining room, expansion of courtyard seating by eliminating circular staircase bisecting the area, and really dressing up the courtyard bar with larger eating surfaces and comfortable lounging. while maintaining his frequent, creative menu options, Jonathan has created four menus: bar snacks; small, medium and large plates 3with desserts. While waiting for our group, we sampled the bar snacks of Japanese trail mix(fried edamame +) along with the hot buttered rum popcorn - a real taste treat. Spicy bloody mary and ginger beer vodka helped wash it down. From the small plates, we had to relive the pate' with homemade mustard and over the top pear butter. My personal favorite from the medium plate menu was the Cioppino (Italian bouillabaise). Finally, we shared the hanger steak, tender and juicy, with frittes and sauce choices as well as chef's traditional burger. Exotic cocktails were enjoyed all around, but no one had room for the three great sounding desserts. BTW: if the food and drinks aren't enough, cast members from American Horror were present and hospitable. Oxalis offers us uptowners to really leave our safe zones and taste the phenomenal food offerings sprouting up in Marigny/Bywater neighborhoods.

Best meal we'd had in NO. Creative and delicious food with some great accompanying mixology. The native New Orlineans, the meat eaters and the vegetarians in our group were impressed. Service was friendly and professional. Music was a little loud but fit the atmosphere.

Yes, first non five star review. Service not fab. Cute, but not fab. The waiter who brought us our cheese & meat didn't even tell us what we they served us. Especially after the waiter specifically told us it's chef's choice for each service. The kid dropped it & flew... Well, tried till we had to yelled at him to come back to tell us. Cauliflower stake dish not fab. The stake cauliflower is outstanding. The other two parts to the dish really didn't taste like anything. Not a great option for veggie/vegans. The brioche burger bun was super dry. The patty itself was decently cooked and seasoned. We sat a good 15 mins before anyone asked to clear our plates... Cocktail selection heavy whiskey & bourbon. If thats what you like, than this is your place. Neither are mine but the ever typical Avaition was so small I had to order a Stiletto. We left to go get dessert at Booty's.

I heard about this place and finally decided to try it out with my husband. The atmosphere and ambiance is really nice! The two dishes we ordered were the Korean fusion type ones which was a mistake. I like food saltier than most, but the salt level in the mushroom rice on the Bo ssam dish was so overwhelming you could barely taste the mushrooms or anything else. The Korean wings were spicy, but other than that, underwhelming. I've heard good things about their salad and cheese plates, but not sure those factors are enough for me to come back. Service was friendly, although they did have to apologize that the kitchen was backed up.

Cajun Hot Spiced Buttered Rum Popcorn. That's all I needed to know. I made plans to be at Oxalis as soon as I read about it on Yelp. And by my rating, you can see I wasn't disappointed. Normally I wait for at least two visits before reviewing a place, especially if there's kinks in operation. I can't lie that I wasn't 100% in love from the get-go. It was a Friday night and so packed that you had to give your name to even sit at the bar. As I stood awkwardly in various spaces (where do you stand when it's cold out and inside is packed?), I vowed to never again eat out in the Bywater on a Friday night. Or anywhere in New Orleans for that matter. The good thing about this scenario is, as seemingly unprepared for such an enthusiastic customer base from the get-go as Oxalis staff was, they handled everyone as though they were important. I truly appreciate this because it's all too easy for staff to be flustered and take that out on customers. Or, even worse, get that "we don't need you, we're packed" mentality. Everyone from the hostess taking names to the bartenders were considerate and nice. And I hope my crankiness didn't come across to the kind folks we encountered, but I arrived hungry at 8:30 pm after traveling and not eating all day (I'm an idiot) and we weren't seated for at least an hour if not a little longer. To be fair, bar seats opened up but I prefer to drink at the bar and eat at a table, so there's that. Hell, people were so eager to partake in Oxalis that they sat in the courtyard and trust me it was cold that night. I doubt the heating lamps would make that much of a difference (I know this because as I type I'm sitting with three layers of clothes in my living room with a gas heater on high less than five feet away). Are you dying now for me to stop whining about my bad decisions and start talking about the main attraction here? The food (the cocktail list will attract bourbon/whiskey drinkers. This is not me. I stuck to wine). The food, oh the food! It's so good that I'm not even going to attempt to wax poetic about the atmosphere because I was too busy stuffing my face to really notice anything other than it was pretty damn inviting. I'll get back there soon and be able to describe it more accurately. Start with the aforementioned popcorn. You won't be sorry. True, I'm a popcorn addict (look at my profile under "don't tell anybody else but...") and it doesn't take a lot to please me when it comes to this snack. As long as it's not microwave crap, I'm happy. Mmmm spicy/buttery/slightly sweet. Next up, the kale salad. I love that they mix fresh kale with crispy kale, making it unlike any other kale salad I've had before and if you know me, you know I eat kale salad at least 5X a week (yeah, I've got a problem). Don't think I stopped there. This meal was an all-out splurge (you would never know this from the looks of our bill, though! Price point is ON point). Seasonal vegetables and polenta!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Less like polenta and more typical of our city's rich & creamy grits., this main entree really was just what I needed to wipe away all traces of the crankies. Normally I would say it was the third glass of Tempranillo, but this hearty dish of vegetarian comfort food is just completely what the doctor would order for a cold & cranky night. I keep talking about how cranky I was. That Oxalis was able to turn this around after making me wait a hour *cue the hangry* is saying a lot. I can't fault them for being so good that people want to patronize them. That's a good thing! I want this place around for the long haul so I can become a regular. And I have no doubt that's going to happen.

OXALIS New bar//restaurant in a familiar building. We made our first visit, for beer, wine, & burgers. Cheeseburgers were surprisingly good. Soggy, limp fries, though. Redecorated, restroom finally modernized with working commode. Slow service, very limited menu, cozy atmosphere with neighborhood crowd of drinkers, not diners. Well stocked bar for cocktails, liquors, & liquers; but limited not-so-cold beer & wines. No salt or pepper shakers. Street parking only, typical of 'hood. Confusing entrance signage; the REAL entrance is just behind an "Entrance" sign pointing away from it; try the second door from corner on Louisa Street side. I say: The just across-the-street Booty's menu is better; unless you really want a burger.. Try "Oxalis" for a drink, first Ayer les bon mangers ! Rick

I remember only one thing about my dining experience at Oxalis: the terrible service. Our server was incredibly rude and condescending. She first did not talk to us when we sat down, welcome us, or explain the menus. When I asked what the gulf fish-of-the-day was, she looked at me with disgust. Curious about the polenta & vegetable entree, I asked how the polenta was served. She scoffed at me, "it's polenta." I still know nothing about the polenta entree. Our entrees came out at different times, staggered over the course of 20 minutes. My food was cold by the time the rest of my party received theirs. The bill came and I did all the math to split it & make it easy on her. We had one card and the rest cash. I included my tip in the credit card transaction, and when I signed the slip, struck a line through the tip line. SHE CHASED US OUT OF THE RESTAURANT!, insisting we shorted her on the bill (we double checked, it positively added up). I was utterly astonished at our awful experience. I will certainly not be returning, and I have nothing good to say about Oxalis.

I visited Oxalis shortly after it opened, and it already seemed to be a well-oiled machine. Friendly service tended to our large group of boisterous ladies, without being too overbearing. The Old Fashioned I tried was inventive yet tasty, and the menu had the same qualities -- as it was mid-afternoon, the only food I sampled was the popcorn, which was pretty amazing. For those who don't want a cocktail, there is a wide selection of bourbon (they bill themselves as a "whiskey-focsued restaurant"), and offer beer and wine as well. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with lots of communal seating. Definitely a fun place for groups. I'm interested to go back and sample some of the larger, gastro-pub-ish fare: duck pate, tomato and burrata salad. The veggie-friendly cauliflower "steak." And as a bonus, the prices aren't bad at all.

Oxalis looks great from the outside! I have ordered the old fashioned drink several times and it is great!! especially at five dollars- I would go back just for this - along with attractiveness of the space. I did not have a very good dining experience here, however. french fries- average kale salad-ok (would be better as a side salad)/ runny orange juicy vinegerette sweet potato poutine- was like a baked sweet potato that was mashed with melted cheese- meh fish and beans- ok. would not want to spend over 10$ for this unattractive, low skill dish- creme brulee- absolutely the worst creme brulee i have ever tasted- lumpy and chalky- horrible texture and nothing special flavor served in the tiniest cup ever and we still didnt want to eat it the skill doesnt seem to be there with the food in regards to the presentation of the space/ menu/price-- the entrees should be much more skillfully prepared/interesting/flavorful and attractive if the price of food were half what it currently is would give it three stars-currently the quality is on par with a casual dining american food place/bistro i would suggest they cut the psuedo fancy out and focus the space as a drinks forward bar with snacks/ bar fare would be much more suitable-- i would be open to trying the burger which seems fair at 9$ but would not bother with anything else on the food menu at this point

The hubby and I decided to come for an early dinner after we saw the cioppino on the menu. The ambiance is quite nice... Hidden in the Bywater neighborhood there's indoor seating and an outside patio. We sat at a small table in the corner with only a few other patrons inside. Here's the run down: Drinks- I had the Pank Drank, a play on a margarita. I was intrigued to try because of the basil in the description. However, there was absolutely no hint of basil whatsoever... But it was fruity and citrusy, so I drank it all. The hubby had the Northcoast beer, which he really liked. Apps- I had the Local Tomato salad. It was nice and refreshing, but nothing spectacular. The hubby had the cioppino. The broth was super flavorful and there was a lot more seafood than we expected. A nice big piece of octopus, chunks of snapper and a ton of clams. Definitely the highlight of the meal. Entrees- I had the Lamb Belly (cause they were out of the cheek). This dish is very similar to the Lamb Neck dish at Toup's Meatery. Hands down, Toup's dish is much better. The black eyed peas with the belly were slightly undercooked. The hubby had the burger with marrow. Just an average burger, overpowered by the aioli. Both our dishes definitely needed more acidity to balance it out. Overall, we would come back for the cioppino, but everything else was just meh.

Very laid back with a classy/casual twist. Food was delicious and service was "spot on". Wait was not very long to be seated and food was served fairly quickly. Menu did not have a large selection but was diverse in its choices. I would definitely return again.

Food is awesome! Service SUCKS! Get ready to wait, because if you don't look like their kind forget it. We couldn't even see, it was so dark in the place. The candle was out they didn't even try to replace it, we had to use phone flashlight to see menu. We waited 30 minutes for a ticket.

Went here a month or so ago for dinner with three other people. Great little spot--it was a warm evening and it was nice to duck into a little dark place with an almost pub-like atmosphere. The food was great. The standouts to me were the pate plate, the salad with crispy kale, and the cocktails. One friend had the burger and loved it. I can't remember exactly what I had but it was something like duck bacon; I just remember that it was ridiculously good. Super delicious cocktails--I had something kindof like a French 75 but with gingery flavor to it--and they weren't a**holes when I ordered something not-whisky. I'll definitely go back. Seems like a good restaurant for a semi-romantic dinner: maybe like a 2nd or 3rd date kinda place. Check it out. Worth the trip.

This place wishes it were as cool as it TRIES to be. Unfortunately, it ends up being really more of a Monkey Hill for hipsters. Before anyone says I don't give them credit for what they do well, the food is admittedly very good. Get a combination meat/cheese plate as an appetizer. Everything on it was delicious and the side garnishes are very nice as well. The burger was pretty good (eye roll from waiter when I ordered it though) and while tasty, the drum entree was tiny. But here is why the place is a big drag for me - the wait staff was just plain rude and condescending. Two tables seated after mine received service and placed orders before I even got my water. When I finally got that, it was delivered by a very unhappy server who just plopped it down on our table without a word, without a smile, without a greeting or even eye contact. Seriously? The waiter was a c-, and he showed his annoyance with any questions we had about wines on the list or dishes on the menu that really could use some explanation. And weirdly enough, not once, not twice, but THREE TIMES the word "funky" was used to describe items on the menu. Here's a tip - if you want to make your food sound bad and have people not want to order it, keep using the term "funky".. This is a big fail. As to the ambiance, the decor and design are stylish and nice in a casual way, but the acoustics suck so bad you can barely hear anything other than noise. The music is turned up really loud, but the poor audio system coupled with terrible acoustics make for this only adding to the auditory misery of the patron. It would take listening really hard to hear they were playing the black keys or the strokes because the sound was so horrendous you could barely tell what the music was - and I loved the bands they were playing. You just couldn't hear them despite how loudly the music was playing because the sound was so poor. So,! while I enjoyed my food well enough, the experience was negative enough to make me cross the street and go to Booty's where the wine was 1/2 as expensive (and better) and the wait staff actually seemed to care whether it not I was enjoying my experience there as opposed to trying way too hard to be cool and failing. No thanks.

The drinks are outstanding and the atmosphere is perfect. This place is able to strike a terrific balance between slinging really great cocktails and not being insufferably pretentious, which is somehow becoming rare in this town all of a sudden. Their $5 old fashions are a perfect example of this. The patio is lovely and is a really fantastic place to knock back a few at happy hour on a nice day. If the review was for cocktails, Five Stars across the board. BUT, there is the food which would be a Two Star rating in isolation. I've been twice and both times everyone at the table was unbelievably disappointed. We've had the burger and even adding marrow didn't help this (dry, poorly cooked, overpriced), the bo ssam (flavor profile completely off, not authentically korean at all), the meat plate (had twice, but it's just basically a bunch of meats that are not memorable purchased from San Francisco, etc and not made in house), the caprese salad (which was great, but, let's be honest, I'm not going to return to a place for a compilation of mozz, basil, and tomato), and the pate (which was good enough, but was placed in such a tall jar that it was actually really difficult to forage it out of there and I remember us leaving some in the jar rather than getting dirty and fishing it out ) So, the point is GO GO GO for cocktails and then go elsewhere for dinner.

Overall, Oxalis has a gorgeous interior, pretty good cocktails, a really well-curated beer selection and prettyyyyy pretty good eats. I went for the first time with my #1 boo thang for some arbitrary occasion. As I said, the interior is stunning; dark with framed air plants, luxe-looking leather seating and a damn good-looking bar. I had an Aviation, which was good and he had a Last W[a/o]rd (I learned it as the Last Word but Oxalis has it on the menu as the Last Ward?) The Last Ward was a bit tart, but otherwise good. We had the coconut curry mussels as an appetizer, as I was still eating an array of bivalves at this time, and they were pretty phenomenal. Oxalis has a pretty wide array of vegetarian and vegan options given the small size of their overall menu. I ordered the cauliflower "steak" and my partner ordered a burger and fries. The flavors in the cauliflower steak were really good, but the dish came out a bit cold. I think I read in another Yelp review that their dish also came out this way, so perhaps it is the intent of the chef. My boyfriend said the burger was "the best burger [he] has ever had in [his] life." French fries were okayyyy. Oxalis carries what might be my favorite beer; Unibroue's Maudite. They have a good deal of other interesting beers that I have not seen at many other restaurants or bars in New Orleans. I am not much of a whiskey drinker, but this is the spirit Oxalis specializes in. I can attest to a large selection, but I am not well-versed enough in this spirit to attest to the quality of curation. I'm sure it's good. The service was good, prompt, but not overly chatty. That's okay, I don't want to talk to anyone either. We skipped dessert, which in retrospect, is really out of character for us and I am disappointed in my past self.

Fancier than Booty's, but this spot is fantab. Had drinks here and no food, but everything smelled delicious that went past us sitting on the communal table. Can't wait to come back to this area and eat dinner.

This place is popular. I had an experience last night, a Friday, not unlike Joi B.'s in her review, but minus the serious hangry of a low food day. Still, if you go on a Friday or Saturday night, you must expect to wait. When we arrived, we gave our name to the hostess and were seated in the lounge, which was almost full. The lounge has a somewhat unfinished feel, like they are going to put a bar back there in the front part or something. Still, it was comfortable and far preferable to trying to squeeze into the cracks of the dining area during our wait. Plus, drinks! So, yay! They were out of cava, but they gave us what they had, gratis, and we had a longer chance to explore the lengthy drink menu. It turns out they have two selections of mezcal that I've not seen at local stores, so that was fun. The first time I went, the memorable dishes were the "cauliflower steak" and the cioppino. The cauliflower steak is roasted cauliflower with a nice cheese served over buckwheat with a little pureed beet sauce. There really are no words that can explain this flavor combination, but it works so well. It was a big hit. The cioppino was more deconstructed and broth-y than other more stew-like versions I have had, with easily accessible big shrimp, fish, etc. and crusty bread to sop up the tomato-y broth. Last night we split the duck pate, which was served with a grapefruit Abita-infused mustard, a pear spread, pickled shallots, and toasted bread - so rich and delicious. We also ordered the sweet potato poutine - soft chunks of sweet potato with melted cheese and the occasional meaty bite. I really enjoyed my tomato salad, which was as much burrata as tomato, and thus all attempts to be slightly virtuous were thwarted in a most-delightful way. The service was a really mixed bag. This place seems to operate on an everyone-works-the-whole-house system. So, it makes sense that a mixed bag is the result. But all of the servers were polite at the very least, if not warm and attentive, which some very much were. Also, the music, which is fun, is played sort of loudly in the front of the house, but the acoustics of the building itself don't seem to pose a loudness problem. All in all, I really like this new restaurant, and I look forward to patio dining weather even more now, thanks to Oxalis.

Edison bulbs-- check. Taxidermied animal heads on the walls-- check. Communal dining table--check. The crew here has done a good job turning what was once a dingy barbecue and brunch joint into a cozy, rustic-chic gastropub. I arrived on a Friday night with two dining companions in tow, completely expecting to be sardined into a packed bar. There was a wait, all right, but we were smoothly conveyed to this sleek little lounge area behind the courtyard. Then came pleasant surprise number two: old-fashioneds for $5! And they were potent and delicious, so much so that I forgot we were waiting for a table and not just getting drunk on black leather couches under boar heads. We sat at the communal table (where not much communing with other diners happened; in fact none whatsoever-- it seems like the protocol is to ignore the people at your table extra hard, and I am FINE with that) and ordered Cajun hot spiced buttered rum popcorn. SO GOOD. And a cheese plate-- it was a cheese plate. The cheese all were pretty similar in texture. Another round of old fashioneds. I got the polenta and veggies and my boyfriend got the cauliflower steak. My dish was cooked to perfection and there was a pretty nice assortment of veggies, but it tasted bland. I wished the polenta had been cooked in a more flavorful broth. And at $14 it wasn't cheap. Overall: I'll come back, but just for drinks and snacks, not an entree. If you're a vegetarian, it's probably better to stick with small bites and booze.

Ok. I have't yelped in a year. But I'm trying to get back into it, and if any place deserves to be the first review upon my return, it's Oxalis. Now, I'm not one to get all excited about the trendy places that keep popping up in the Bywater. Some are good, some are ok, but few are actually on top of my mind whenever I think about places to go. In a few short weeks of opening, this place caught my eye. Or should I say tongue? Taste buds? ...You get the point. It has only been open for a few weeks and I have already been there twice. I first went there opening week for a friend's birthday. There were about 10-12 of us and I must admit we can be quite the demanding bunch. We are probably the biggest group of food and drink critics that I know. The service was impeccable, the food was delightful, the drinks were damn near perfect. The second time I went, I brought a friend of mine there (the very next week). Again, great service, food, and drinks! The menu consists of about 5 pages of cocktails, whiskeys, and bourbons, and one menu of food. Pretty much the perfect proportion of a menu. The menu has a little bit of everything, and we tried it all. I hear the burger was good. The frites with two sauces were amazing! There was popcorn and salads and much more that I can't remember right now because mostly, my life was forever changed by the American wings. Smoked chicken wings that are then fried and topped with... well, I don't really know... just lots of goodness. These wings will have you proud to be an American. As far as cocktails, I tried a few and they were all good, but my favorite was the Acadiana Yacht Club. Can't remember what's in it. But, it was delicious. Also, check out their menus of whiskey and bourbon. A great selection! The prices for both food and drink were amazing. We all know how those new, trendy places can be. Tiny food for big bucks. But not this place. Even the cheese plates were so much more affordable that other places in the city. The atmosphere is both romantic and comfortable at the same time. Whatever night you are looking to have, somehow, this place can accommodate it. It's inviting to those who may just want to sit at the bar alone, grab one of the cute tables with a friend or two, or grab the large table for a bigger group of friends. There's a cute courtyard too that I hope to frequent once it gets a bit warmer. All in all, Oxalis is my new favorite place. And, if you know me, that says a lot! It leaps miles above that place across the street.

Not much to say because most of it has already been said. I can't even recall the names of everything we had but every single thing was delicious. For staters it was the cheese and meat platter which we wiped out without second thought. For our main courses we had the duck and American wings. YUM. The drinks were very tasty I had one of them with Champagne. Oh and I dare not forget about the dessert. Very light but oh SO divine. This place exceeded my expectations on taste and variety. If you're looking for TGIFridays this is NOT your place. Absolutely a foodie's playground. The staff was helpful and friendly and the ambiance was perfect. So far my favorite in all of French Quarters dining.

I live a mere 4 blocks away from this establishment and I am worried this may very well be where all my money goes. I went on a dinner date with some out of town friends and my boyfriend on a Monday evening. The place was slightly crowded, but we were given a table quickly. The atmosphere is very chic, but without being overly pretentious. The wall hangings are a nice touch, and the bar is a beautiful site. As someone that went to this place prior to it being transformed into Oxalis, the changes are welcome and give it the touches it so desperately needed. I'm happy the courtyard has managed to stay beautiful, and the subtle updates are delightful. Now, onto food. We started with an order of the mussel appetizer for the table. They were wonderful and the coconut milk brought out their great flavor. My boyfriend ordered the Farmhouse Salad, and as someone who is not overly a fan of salads, this one was AMAZING. I stole most of it from my boyfriend's plate. The bleu cheese was perfect with the crisp, fried apples and the choice of dressing was not too heavy or light. Each flavor stood out and I will say it was one of the best salads I have had. My friend's husband order the Oxalis burger (which I've heard good things about), and although I did not personally try it, it looked delicious. My friend's husband devoured it quickly and was greatly pleased with it. My boyfriend ordered the Steak Frites medium-rare. The fries were perfect and crispy, which I ate most of, and the steak was cooked perfectly. I did not get a chance to try his steak, but it looks heavenly. My friend ordered a bottle of red for the table, which I sadly do not recall the name, but it was reasonably priced and very good. Next time, I'll be ordering some of the hand-crafted cocktails in addition to food. I will be coming back with all my out-of-town friends, and will be venturing over when the paycheck allows!

I'll start with pros: excellent bourbon and scotch selection, good cocktails according to those who've had them. Our server was friendly and spoke knowledgeably about the menu. I also liked the decor and ambiance inside, and didn't notice any of the acoustic problems I've heard others complain about (although it wasn't too full when we went). The food, unfortunately, wasn't what I hoped. We started with the cheese plate, which was great, but went downhill from there. The mussels were mediocre, done in a coconut milk/turmeric sauce that just felt incomplete, really needed something to act as a foil for the coconut. The gulf fish was done over a very flavorful corn/lima bean succotash, but the fish itself fell flat. Maybe I haven't had enough dishes here to give the kitchen a full evaluation, but based on my first trip, I probably wouldn't go back. In short, service and drinks were solid, food was pretty good, but not on par with other restaurants at the same price point. For the same money I'm going to Mariza a few blocks away.

Absolutely delicious! We had dinner in the private dining room, which is absolutely beautiful and has a fireplace in the waiting area. The ambiance is beautiful, warm, and sophisticated. Our server Patrick was attentive and delightful. It was NYE and I had the vegie prix fix, but others at the table had the steak, which they swore was the best they had ever had. Our whole table had the pot de creme for dessert--amazing!!! Thank you for such a memorable night!

Great new addition to the Bywater, and a lot better vibe and location than the previous Uptown place La Fin du Monde which I understand was the same folks. At Oxalis expect a slightly crowded, loud space but good drinks, food, and surprisingly friendly service given the hipster vibe. Lots of cocktail options so go with with what you want, and the wine list is small but decent list of glass pours at a reasonable price point. As for food, we heard great things about the Bo Ssam pork belly dish but didn't decide to try it ourselves. In terms of small plates, we got the Sweet Potato Poutine which really wasn't exciting - clearly there's a lot of creative license taken to call this poutine and it was fine but not something I would order again and certainly not something I would call poutine. As for other items the Kale Salad was quite good and the burger was done very well while a spiced carrot cake for dessert was again not your traditional carrot cake but very good. Clearly they're trying to do things differently at Oxalis, and it's pretty clear that this place will be a hit. There are also quite a few vegetarian options across the menu which is nice to see and should be a good fit with neighborhood and updated tastes in NOLA. I'm definitely a fan, and plan to be back.

Burger with side of bone marrow gets 4 stars. Service gets one star. Waited one hour for 5 burgers. Only Got one burger comped and no make good drinks. Don't sit at tables served by the waitress with a bush tattoo on the back of her right arm. Her service was poor.

Oh my god YUM! I can't stop thinking about the Beet & Goat Cheese Bruschetta... I'm talkin' melt in your mouth good. Everything we had was amazing. I sprung for the French 95 ( a whiskey take on the classic French 75 we all know & love ) and I'd get it again. Even though it's summer in New Orleans and the vapors are quite permeable, we lavished ourselves in delicacies at our courtyard table, and I cannot wait to return.

Oxalis is a great addition to the burgeoning bywater restaurant scene. The cocktails are excellent - and although the menu is bar forward, the food is delicious and consistent. The steak and frites and kimchi veggies (app) are two of my favorite options. However, the burger is done so well and is such a bargain it's tough to pass up. For vegetarian diners, there are a couple options and the polenta with roasted seasonal veggies is a true comfort food.

Oh my goodness! My boyfriend and I just happened upon Oxalis as we were making our way to Pizza Delicious and we were skeptical to go in because their site wasn't up yet and no menu was available online. We were hesitant about having a Booty's-esque experience (pricey but just meh) but just went for it anyway. If you're having the same dilemma, don't hesitate any longer-- just go in. Everything about this bar is excellent. Their menu is extensive and offers a range of drinks and food within a variety of budgets. Cheap or fancy-- they have it. Super open yet cozy space? Check. Friendly staff? Check. More whiskey options that you can imagine? Check. Sweet potato poutine? CHECK. Come here. You'll love it. Now, if only I lived in New Orleans...

I thought this was a great change from the previous situation that just didn't seem to be consistent, nor appeasing. over the years this place took its hits, so its nice to see someone use the patio for reals. nice menu, lots of drinks, nice to see waitstaff dressed nicely, and not in a uniform, or ugly clothing. I get tired of trendy looking staff, with attitudes in my hood, so this was a breath of fresh air. however, y'all were doing some photo shoot, so I think this took over what would have been stellar service. I'll be back to see. nothing bad on your staff, but so many pix of food, and stuff coming out of kitchen, that I think you pushed them to cater to your photo's, and left your waiters WAITING, along with your customers. we had many items. my friends had the pate, WHICH I tried, but not my thing. they loved it. then we had the pear and blue cheese salad, duck, cioppino, and a burger with marrow. creme brulee drinks. wasn't real excited for the marrow, but then again, I didn't order that. but I did try everyones dishes, and everything was very tasty. it took forever to get food, took forever to get the bill. what should have been a nice evening, was a LONG evening. but then again, I think was due to the photoshoot, that went on for our entire meal. so your losing a star for that. I will come back and check you out again. however, I would never sit inside. entirely too loud for me. LOOKS super comfy. remember they don't serve dinner until about five, so if you get there before then? you gotta wait. see I've tried to come here a few times, and kept missing your food serving time. LOL anyhow, much luck, and success.

The only good thing I have to say is that everything we ordered was amazing. However the service was one of the worst I have ever encountered in this city. I was here with my friends parents and after waiting 20 minutes after we had already finished our appetizers we had to go to the bar to beg our waitress to take our order. She finally came over and after this you think the service would improve but no. Then my friend and I ordered two small plates (kale salad and sweet potato poutine) instead of an entree and they brought out our kale salads first before anything else which was slightly awkward but we dealt with it. Then they brought out the sweet potato poutine and when my friend and I exclaimed how great it smelled the woman who brought it out (who was not our waitress and I believe the hostess) goes "yeah it's really good but it's horrible for you. It's basically an artery blocker." After she said that my appetite was pretty much ruined. Who says that?????? Even McDonald's workers don't say that when they hand you a Big Mac. It was completely classless and made me not want to eat my meal. No one wants to be reminded of the calories when they are making a splurge on a meal out. Have some common sense. One of the worst parts of this whole fiasco is that our drinks were also taking forever. We were hoping to at least get drunk since our food was taking forever but even that couldn't happen. Eventually our entrees finally came (one by one). We waited for at least ten minutes before the final entree came out. The father we were with who was generous enough to be paying for our meal finally said something to the same woman who made us feel guilty about our poutine. When he complained about how long we were waiting on his wife's dish she said "what do you want me to do, the kitchens slow." Are you kidding me? I am honestly disgusted by this rude service. This woman should be fired and I will not be back. The only redeeming factor is that the food was actually good. However, given the fact that we live in New Orleans and there are plenty of amazing restaurants with excellent service, I see no reason to return here and hope no one else does.

Between a 3&4 star joint. Cocktails are good to great. Food is fair to good. But I had to laugh when I checked out their by the bottle wine list. Cristom Mt Jeferson Cuvée for $80?!? You've got to be kidding me. That's over triple retail. Maybe I made a mistake recalling the price on their menu but if that's how they mark up wine holy shit!

They have very good cheeseburgers. The French fries are also very good. They're very personable. The Korean wings and kale salad are phenomenal. The Korean wings are super deliciously spicy. The polenta and vegetables are also very delightful. Great place in a great neighborhood.

A whisky restaurant, you say? Color me intrigued. I had to go check out the restaurant that puts whisky before food (as I am often known to do). Verdict: heavy hipster vibe but I really like it! I love the layout of the place, traveling through several rooms and two bar spaces to get to our table. The table itself felt like we were VIPs in some swanky modern place. The couch type seating made it slightly awkward to eat but was nice to relax with my $5 old fashioned. Swanky, hipsterish, but I can get really tasty fries and a $5 old fashioned. That's a pretty sweet deal in my book. Our table enjoyed both our food and our cocktails. The staff was very friendly overall, if not a little difficult to find at times. We were sitting next to a group of insipid grad school morons but I won't discount the restaurant for the people who choose to patronize it. I'll be back I'm sure. The price point is a little higher than I would normally like but overall it's not that bad. I mean...$5 old fashioneds.

Worth the trip! This place had great ambiance, delicious food and drinks for a reasonable price. My husband and I sat in the beautiful court yard for dinner and loved everything. Wonderful service also! Our waiter was very attentive, and everyone was kind and welcoming. The Vegetarian friendly menu!

Oxalis hits all the marks and then some. The atmosphere is perfect. Often I find myself seeking a dining experience that is distinctive, meaning that the restaurant isn't too concerned with distilling a certain "something" or curating an artificial ambiance. Come in. Eat. Drink. Etc... That's what I want. That's what Oxalis delivers. The food menu offers a perfect amount of delicious entrees. They break it down in a way to satiate any palate or appetite. Try the Local Tomato Salad, Bywater Bosam with Shrimp, Steak Frites, and any specialty cocktail. By god, Try it all! If you are in the mood for strictly libations, the selection is vast and filled with gems. Rare whiskeys abound! Oxalis has a gorgeous cocktail lounge and two patios. They are cozy and aesthetically beautiful. I can not wait for spring! The staff is friendly and fun. The kitchen delivers the flavor. It's a killer combo.

Great courtyard for late afternoon happy hour! I live a couple blocks away & have been here a few times now. The service has been great each time from the owners and the staff & the cocktails are delicious. I've only had appetizers, but they've all been tasty - I don't like mussels, but my friends that I was with raved about them. Highly recommend!

If you want to share a great dining experience amongst friends with good drinks & great food, look no further than Oxalis! Both the atmosphere and cuisine are outstanding. The space is unique and vast; two bars, two outdoor areas, all unique but overall the same great feel. The highlights for me would be the Bo Ssam and American Wings. The cocktails were perfectly crafted and something to be enjoyed. This place is definitely on it's way up, I highly recommend you move it to the too of your list of places to try!!!!

The good news: The space on the corner of Dauphine and Louisa that housed Bywater BBQ during its years-long descent from mediocrity to awfulness has been given a thorough makeover and bears absolutely no resemblance to its former dreary incarnation. (I'm not counting the short time it housed the eminently forgettable restaurant that was there for a spell after Bywater BBQ closed, since I bet you can't remember what it was called either.) It's now a hip, convivial, and downright sexy little restaurant with a charming outdoor patio that fits in perfectly with the happening Bywater restaurant scene, and manages the difficult trick of feeling both brand new and an established part of the neighborhood at the same time. The even better news: The food and drink at Oxalis is pretty terrific too. The extensive whiskey-focused bar alone would make it a must-visit in my book, and you have to love a place that has a special place on the menu for plastic-top whiskeys (and will make you a killer Old Fashioned with any of them for a mere five bucks). But the food is better than it needs to be in a place that foregrounds its boozy options so much. I've tried a little of almost everything on the menu during three visits here with friends and haven't hit a bad dish yet. The mussels in particular are some of the best I've had in New Orleans, the sweet potato poutine is a great twist on a much-beloved (at least by me) French-Canadian dish, and even something as simple as a dish of sauteed vegetables and greens on a pool of cheese-laced polenta was one of the best things I've tasted this year. So yeah, I love this place. Say what you will about the hipsterization/gentrification of the Bywater, but at Oxalis at least they're still keeping it real.

Love love love this spot. I always get a $5 old fashioned and Korean wings. I also love the frites and the aioli sauce that comes with it. My boyfriend loves the burger - friends have also ordered other things off the menu and they've all been delicious. I try to go here once a week or at least every other week, it can add up to be a little expensive but it's worth it! Sit outside in the courtyard if the weather is nice.

This is a great addition to the restaurants in the Bywater. The service is consistently thoughtful and efficient. The decor is charming without looking like it's trying too hard, and there is also heated outdoor seating that is lovely even on a cold rainy day. I do wish there were slightly more food options (given that their drink menu is quite extensive); regardless the food is great, especially the burger. This has become one of my go to places for dinner.

Aggressive and rude staff. Unsanitary. Brought a group of out of town guests and was embarrassed by the whole experience. The staff was upset to have ten people walk in and try to give them business, stating "What do you expect us to do when ten people walk into your bar?" When paying customers asked for service instead of trying to accommodate, the waitress and bartender argued with my friends. They delivered an appetizer to the wrong table. When the staff realized that this was delivered to the wrong table, they took it away. The diner touched and ate some of this food. I couldn't believe it when I saw the staff take this same plate of partially eaten popcorn and put it on a tray with drinks to be delivered to another table. Restaurants make mistakes, but they usually let the diner kept the food or throw it away. I have never seen something like this happen. The Health Department needs to visit this place, because I do not think that it would approve of serving food in this manner. Although the staff is great at arguing, the staff can't argue with the health department and win.

I had a great dinner here a few weeks ago sitting at the bar and letting the helpful staff pick a few great items for me. For one thing the decor is great and the whole place has an excellent vibe. The vibe got better after they made me their version of the Moscow Mule which certainly elevated my mood. The chicken wings were great and the potato side I had was out of this world. I think this place is really going to be a huge hit and I've been talking it up all over town.

Im in the resto biz; came down to scout food and this (along with petite grocery) was the best food I've had in NOLA. Per Se et al vets from NY & chicago came down for some 'easy' and brought some chops. All the famous spots (galatoire, commanders, etc) are more museum than cuisine. Make the trip to Bywater, y'all. Won't be disappointed.

Oxalis feels like your favorite neighborhood spot even though it's brand spankin' new. It's a great place to meet friends, as they don't take reservations and are very accomodating about letting you pull up extra chairs to your table. The Kale Salad and the Bo Ssam were delicious, as are the wine and cocktails. Definitely worth a trip to the Marigny!

We stumbled upon the freshly opened Oxalis and, very sadly, only had time for drinks and a cheese plate on their inviting patio. We ordered three cocktails and all were made well and presented nicely. Unfortunately I've drunk so many cocktails on this trip I can't remember all of their names boooo. Final Ward was a standout, though. Moss "paintings," thoughtful lighting, a distressed wood mantle, and very good service all made the atmosphere comfy and hard to leave on an unseasonably warm December night. The cheese plate came with warm bread, candied nuts, tasty berries and a delicious persimmon (I think?) compote. Looking forward to a return trip for dinner and many more cocktails. P.S. The Bywater is looking GREAT yipeeee!

Loved this place. None of the dishes disappointed. The cocktails were amazing, we tried nearly everything on the menu, but the Old Fashioned was the best hands down. The Buck ( housemade ginger soda with vodka) was a close second. We tried the Korean wings, which were very spicy and very messy and completely awesome. We tried the tomato brushetta at the same time and tomato helped cut through the spicy wings. I liked the Bo Ssam, but the pork belly was a little tough for me, the flavor was really good. No complaints with the sevice, it is a 'whomever comes by' ind of service but everyone was attentive and nice. We went at about 830 on a Friday night, the place was busy but not over crowded. We sat inside, which was dark and loud, but the music was to our taste. The courtyard and bar outside looked lovely, but in August I wanted a cooler atmosphere. It was like any of the good hipster psots in Atlanta, but with less of a price tag.

We happened upon this restaurant while walking around one evening and stopped in on a whim. I could not be happier that we made this stop because we had the most delicious meal of or stay in New Orleans. The outdoor dining area was welcoming and beautifully serene. I had the cioppino with squid, clams, and local fish with a tomato fish broth. The dish was so beautifully seasoned and cooked to perfection. I was blown away by this meal and it was a perfect way to end our New Orleans trip. If I ever return to NOLA I will certainly be stopping here!

Like it. Comfy, cozy spot. Decent cocktails. Excellent mussels. It's more of a drinks and nibbles place than a restaurant. But I'll certainly be back.

I hoped for the best but expected underwhelming pretension and unfortunately the latter is exactly what I got. the pate was an extremely small portion which I am not one to complain about unless I have found better else where (Luke has better tasting pate that is all around better portion wise, presentation wise and price wise. I felt like I was getting ripped off here) the cheese plate had two slivers of three different types of cheese that were average at best. this was how I felt about everything I ate. Not to mention the service was a little too stuffy for their location. three small plates one medium a tiny burger and 3 drinks and 170 dollars later I felt extremely ripped off. considering I could have gotten several drinks at Bellocq or the cure and pate and small plates at Luke or even booty's across the street for much less.

We went to Oxalis as a celebration dinner and we were very pleased. It has a nice vibe as you enter with people thoroughly enjoying themselves in the bar. We went on a Tuesday night and had no wait. They have a nice variety on their menu even if it is fairly small. We began with two of the "social" plates: the cheese plate and the duck pate. Both were delicious. The duck is served with a mustard and a pear butter, and bread. It made a delicious combination. We then had the Bo Ssam with pork belly which was out of this world delicious and the seasonal vegetables with polenta which was also delicious. We couldn't decide on dessert and our server recommended the creme brulee. which I normally won't get because it seems boring. But this was definitely not, it was superb! Our bill was very reasonable and we left happy and satisfied.

From the moment I walked into this place I was delighted with the atmosphere and service. I was immediately seated outside on the cozy patio. The pâté' was very good and my wine was perfect! Next was the rib, only one, which I felt shorted, ha ha! But I felt the serving was to small but it was very good. Next was the fish, delicious! The best part was the Devine chocolate dessert! I went back and got one to go the next night! Well worth the money!

After reading rave reviews of this place I was excited to finally go, but disappointed to see that Oxalis appears to follow the trend of most new restaurants in the bywater: decent food, bad service. I went with friends and had a decent time until we noticed there was black mold on the cap of our water bottle. When the server came by we politely asked for a clean bottle and they took it away without an apology....then later brought what appeared to be the same, dirty bottle back to our table. When we finished we sat at an empty table for about 15 minutes before they came by to see if we needed a check, and we were one of only 3 tables at the time. If you are across the street and need some food, it won't kill you to stop in (unless you are severely allergic to black mold), but I think it goes without saying that none of us will be going back.

I liked Oxalis and everything I tried was good. However, I wasn't truly wowed by anything, which is why I went with 3 stars instead of 4. Went with two other people and so we were able to try several items. The jar of pickles and kimchi was good, but I would have preferred a little more of the pickles (I love pickles!) and a little less of other kimchi stuff. There was something red that I'm not sure what it was -- peppers? tomato? Regardless, the consistency wasn't for me. For my main course I had the steak frites. Meat was nice and tender and I liked the Hollandaise sauce it was paired with. Fries were standard. I also tasted the polenta and seasonal vegetables and I enjoyed it. I love fried okra, but had never seen whole pieces of it battered a fried. A different take, but still tasty. And we also tried the duck pate. The other two members of my party weren't into it at all and so it was left to me to eat the majority of it. But pate is something that I can only handle in small amounts, so we didn't finish it. If you like pate, you'll like it, but I think next time I'll pass. They have tons of whiskey options, if that's your thing. I like whiskey but don't have the refined palate or the interest in being a connoisseur. But I liked the drink I had, though I can't remember what it was called. In terms of price, Oxalis is not cheap, but it won't break the bank either. And the service was just fine -- no problems at all. I'd go back to Oxalis again if somebody wanted to, but I don't think I'll have any strong internal drive to pop back in. To bring it full circle, it just felt like something was missing, but I have no idea what. Good food and good atmosphere, but I just wasn't blown away.

Multi-room/patio restaurant with an amazing atmosphere. All rooms and patios - yes patioS! - provides a unique ambiance, so you'll be sure to find one that fits with your mood! Food was great (especially the dessert and the bruschetta; our steak was just ok). Service was good. We would definitely be back if we were living anywhere close to this little neighbourhood gem!

Oxalis is a wonderful spot for an evening of upscale cocktails and small bites with friends. It's not my top choice in the neighborhood for a full-on dinner experience, but some friends and I tried out much of their menu, and the flavors and portion sizes were great. Between the four of us, we ordered the Duck Pate, Charcuterie Plate, Tomato Bruschetta, Sweet Potato Poutine, Kale Salad, Korean Wings, Short Rib, Oxalis Burger, Cauliflower Steak, and the Steak Frites. The meal was indulgent and amazing, but all of us agreed that our picks from the "Social"/"Small"/"Medium" sections of the menu were outstanding, while the entree sizes were a little less impressive. It's the perfect place to go if you want to spend some serious time enjoying an extensive whiskey selection and savoring a progression of appetizers with a group.

Out of all the restaurants in the Bywater Dauphine St. corridor Oxalis is my favorite! Beautifully decorated in the prohibition style that's become so popular lately this place is consistently serving good food and is great for first dates or a gathering of friends. The bar has a unique selection of signature drinks that appear complicated on the menu but are wonderfully balance once mix and served. When it comes to the food you can't go wrong with the Korean wings, the cauliflower steak, the Oxalis burger (keep it simple) and the Gulf Fish that is a great union of land and sea.

Don't you love it when a place you've been dying to try for ages turns out to be everything you wished? Useful to to know: 1) Open 7 days a week! 2) Whiskey pairings 3) Courtyard dining available! We had the Korean wings and the short-rib "medium plates" to start. Delicious and easily divided between 4. The wings are crazy good...and I'm not much of a wing-woman unless i'm helping my male friends pick up on ladies...or guys too for that matter. Main courses included the burger and frites (one of the best I've had in town, for sure) the cioppino and the gulf shrimp with maque choux and butter beans. And the dessert sampler...sweet Lord in heaven. Creme brûlée, pumpkin cheesecake, boca negra (chocolate caramel) with pecan ice cream....perfect for my sister's birthday dinner. I enjoyed all this with a bourbon cocktail with fresh sprig of rosemary. It's the kind of ambience that makes you forget it's Monday. The space is gorgeous, the experience very memorable, and I can't wait to drag a willing companion back here to try the rest of the menu.

Sat on the patio which was very nice. All we had were drinks and the Korean wings. The wings were too spicy for my but my friends did like them. Will come back and try their dinner menu.

Strongly recommended. We stayed in a house in the Bywater on our recent New Orleans trip and loved our dinner/snack at Oxalis. We had the Korean wings which had incredible flavor -- a truly great (and spicy) sauce. Unfortunately the bo ssam lettuce wraps weren't quite as good (not bad, just not up to the same level). The Creole parfait for dessert was also delicious, creamy and not too sweet.

Awesome service and great food. I had a large group that need a quietish space to have a dinner discussion and when the bar area where we were originally seated proved to be way too loud, the staff was accommodating and flexible and allowed our group to move outside. One small suggestion is to invest in some additional fans to keep air in the courtyard space moving. Overall, a great experience.

I really liked Oxalis. I stopped in for a drink and some bites. I was curious about their bo ssam and I'm really glad I tried it. It is pork belly, rice, and pickles served on butter lettuce. I can't remember if they call these pickles kimchi. Technically they wouldn't be wrong in calling them kimchi because kimchi is actually a quite inclusive term for picked vegetables and there are over 100 kinds of kimchi back home. But if you are looking for the typical cabbage kimchi in its bright orange glory, these will take you by surprise. These picked are deep red and have a thicker consistency. Spicy and ginger-y. And most importantly, very delicious. They go perfectly with the pork belly and the rice. I am intrigued by the k wings but the description "kimchi sauce" makes me somewhat hesitant. I may try them one day though, since I'm sure I will be back at Oxalis.
